What differentiates CranioSacral therapy from other modalities?

I am often asked how CranioSacral therapy is different than other modalities.

Every modality has it own process for working and we each have something to contribute. My training is CranioSacral therapy therefore it is the only one that I am qualified to speak of.

The following is not meant to be a comprehensive listing but a starting point from which we can dialogue further.

  1. CranioSacral therapy is non-invasive. We do not push, pull or manipulate in any fashion. We use very light gentle touch – with an adult it is about 5 grams – the weight of a nickel. With children and infants, it is even lighter.
  2. CranioSacral therapy is not a set of treatments. When a person presents with “x” we have no “y” that we will do. We evaluate the whole body –we “listen” to the body with our hands to locate the source of the presenting problem.
  3. We facilitate healing – we “listen” to the client’s body which determines the process and the pathway. We may guide, we may help to keep the client on tract. It is the client’s process and journey – our role is to provide support along the pathway
  4. The CranioSacral perspective is that restrictions can originate in fluid flow – or impedance of fluid flow – blood, lymph or cerebral spinal fluid. It can be in the organs, the fascia or the innervation. Sometimes it is emotional or past trauma. We “listen” to the body to find the source and then facilitate healing from within.
  5. Sometimes a body is stuck in “fight or flight” and needs assistance to calm and reset.
  6. Emotions and/or past traumas can cause symptoms that present as physical ailments.
